Fluvial Sedimentary Response to Late Quaternary Climate and Tectonics at the Himalayan Frontal Thrust, Central Nepal

چکیده

To investigate the subsurface structure surrounding Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) in central Nepal, we drilled and cored sediments to depths of 45–100 m at 10 sites. Our boreholes were located along previously acquired high-resolution seismic profiles across MFT imaging upper 1–2 km subsurface, which revealed a beveled erosional surface hanging wall above broad, gentle anticline, as well growth strata footwall. The exhibit interlayered clays, silts, sands, gravels, dated with optically stimulated luminescence radiocarbon <72.5 ± 4.3 ka, transition from finer coarser ∼13.5 0.1 ka. Near fault tip, deposits steeper dips deformation bands. A 25-m-thick section silt clay south end buried anticline is interpreted temporary lacustrine depocenter formed due uplift near tip. Based on distribution marker beds sediment ages, interpret shortening rate 3.1–12.1 m/ka MFT. Three major transitions between fluvial-lacustrine coarse fluvial channel facies are inferred boreholes, timings these correlate Indian monsoonal intensity variations linked Earth's precession. We infer that strengthened monsoon led increased river discharge advance bedload-dominant braided channels, whereas weak finer-grained environment. These climate have affected depositional environment base levels this region, influencing formation apparent relative nearby terraces.

Sedimentology, mineralogy and sedimentary geochemistry of the Late Quaternary sedimentary sequence of Gavkhoni Playa by looking at the paleoclimate

The sediments of the Playa Lake are sensitive indicators of local climates that any change in climate, hydrology, and sedimentary environment will cause changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sediments. These sediments create a valuable and important archive with high resolution to examine these changes in the past. One method of studying climate change during quaternary and oft...

Geochronologic constraints across the Main Central Thrust shear zone, Bhagirathi River (NW India): Implications for Himalayan tectonics

The Main Central Thrust shear zone is the dominant crustal thickening feature in the Himalayas, largely responsible for the extreme relief and mass wasting of the range. Along the Bhagirathi River in NW India, the Main Central Thrust is several kilometers thick and separates high-grade gneisses of the Greater Himalayan Crystallines from Lesser Himalayan metasedimentary rocks. Th-Pb ion micropro...

Fluvial incision and tectonic uplift across the Himalayas of central Nepal

The pattern of fluvial incision across the Himalayas of central Nepal is estimated from the distribution of Holocene and Pleistocene terraces and from the geometry of modem channels along major rivers draining across the range. The terraces provide good constraints on incision rates across the Himalayan frontal folds (Sub-Himalaya or Siwaliks Hills) where rivers are forced to cut down into risi...
